How a dental crown can improve your smile

06 May 2015, Dabur Dental Team

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to protect it from further damage. They are customised and ideal for people with broken teeth, cavities or other such dental problems. It is used to strengthen and protect the tooth structure especially after a root canal treatment. The crown is cemented into place over the damaged tooth. Most crowns are made of a hard, white substance to help them look natural. A crown is used to entirely cover or ‘cap’ a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment.
There are a few types of crowns available:
  • Temporary crowns: These crowns are resins and are made at the dental clinic itself.
  • Stainless steel crowns: These are pre-fabricated crowns that are used on permanent and baby teeth.
  • Metal crowns: These crowns can be made from cast gold alloys or cast silver palladium alloys. With a metal crown, less tooth structure needs to be removed.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns: These dental crowns look natural and can be very aesthetic. They consist of a porcelain coating over a metal crown.
  • All ceramic crowns: These crowns are basically made up a high strength ceramic. They are much more aesthetic & apparently stronger than metal crowns.
    • Why must you get dental crowns?
Well, a dentist might recommend you to get a crown for the following reasons:
      - Natural look – With dental crowns, patients can restore their damaged or missing teeth and give the illusion of always having a healthy smile. They may also be used to close gaps between teeth.
Durable – Dental crowns last for a long while especially when the teeth are weak or decayed.
      - Speech – Missing teeth or ill-fitting dentures can affect a patient’s speech, making their speech sound slurred or lisped. Restoring missing teeth with crowns can help a patient speak confidently.
      - Cosmetic – A dental crown can replace a missing tooth, restoring the look of your smile.
      - Stain resistant – Dental crowns made with porcelain are stain resistant giving the patient a whiter smile.
      - Restorative – Due to their natural tooth-like features, crowns restore full functions of missing or damaged tooth and aid in speaking and chewing properly.
      - Confidence – Tooth damage can make patients feel self-conscious about their smile. Dental crowns restore teeth that are severely damaged due to trauma, decay, or gum diseases.
      - Comfort – Crowns are stable and do not irritate gums.
Before you opt for crowns, you must be aware that the procedure involves preparation. The tooth is prepared by being trimmed down (reduced) to accommodate the crown or bridge. The crown restores the size, shape and look of your tooth, and after this the tooth can get back to functioning as normal.
