10 Home Remedies Tooth pain
​The physical pain that one experiences due to tooth ache is excruciating to say the least. Toothaches cause more problems than we think they do. For example, one cannot eat properly, speech is affected and the list goes on. Nothing seems to feel right for some reason. A quick fix is what is required for tooth pain. Something, which provides instant relief and is also within one’s reach. Not many are aware that simple home remedies come in handy for tooth pain. It is worth mentioning that these home remedies for tooth pain are not permanent toothache solutions. A visit to the dentist may be required if the pain persists.

Here is a list of home remedies to tackle and prevent tooth pain/toothache:

  1. Salt:

    Salt
    • Starting with the simplest of all, warm salt water is one of the most common remedies for toothache.
    • The saltwater reduces pressure on the nerve endings and also gives instant relief by a method called osmosis.
    • Salt is also a natural anti-bacterial agent which is why it is used to preserve household foods such as pickles etc.
    Method:
    • Mix half to one tablespoon of salt in warm water and rinse your mouth properly with it for about 30 seconds and spit out. Repeat till the glass is empty. Doing this at least thrice a day will relieve you of your tooth pain.
  2. Ice:

    Ice
    • Another remedy that may give you relief instantly is ice. Every time you experience tooth pain, just take an ice cube and bite in to it.
    • Alternately wrap a thin cloth or plastic bag and place it on the cheek. The ice cube numbs the nerves under the tooth thereby relieving pain.
    • Ice basically causes constriction of the vessels & reduces inflammation, which is the underlying cause of pain.
  3. Clove Oil:

    • It is a natural analgesic & antiseptic and has antibacterial properties that can help relieve tooth pain.
    Method of application:
    • Use a cotton ball and soak it in clove oil. Place it against the affected area. Keeping a whole clove is also an option for quick relief from tooth pain. Bite the cloves gently, letting the oil out and then place it on the affected tooth.
  4. Garlic:

    Garlic
    • Leaving aside the fact that bad breath will be a by-product, garlic is an effective tool to reduce toothache.
    • Just crush few cloves of garlic and apply on the affected area.
    • Garlic is a rich source of allicin, a chemical that works well on tooth pain and has anti-inflammatory properties as well.
    • Alternately, chewing garlic will do the job as well.
  5. Peppermint Leaves:

    Peppermint Leaves
    • These leaves are known to have anti-inflammatory properties which reduce swelling and soreness in the gum area.
    • Chew peppermint leaves to derive relief or hold it on the affected area for a prolonged period. Alternately, you can also boil the leaves in water for about 15 minutes and use it to rinse your mouth with.
  6. Cayenne Pepper:

    • More commonly known as red pepper, this spice contains capsaisin which is a natural pain relief substance.

    Method of application:
    • Crush cayenne pepper seeds or you can use its powder as well, mix it with crushed ginger, add water to form a thick paste and apply on the affected area.
    • Alternately, you can also mix the spice with apple cider vinegar.
    Note: Avoid using the remedy on children
  7. Tumeric:

    Turmeric
    • Haldi has for long been used as a healing agent for it anti- bacterial and antiseptic properties. Rightly so, applying it in case of tooth pain will help in ease it.

    Method of application:
    • Mix a tablespoon of turmeric with water and apply on the affected area preferably with a cotton ball. Raw turmeric can also be chewed to provide the same relief.
  8. Cucumber:

    Cucumber
    • It is one of the best remedies for tooth pain. Cucumber has anti-oxidant that provide soothing and calming effects and also aid in relieving pain.
    • Chill a slice of cucumber in fridge and place it on the affected tooth for minutes to get instant relief.
    • Salt can also be sprinkled on the cucumber slice to alleviate the pain.
  9. Acupressure:

    Acupressure
    This form of healing releases endorphins (hormone), which relaxes the body.
    Some techniques in acupressure that you can try at home to ease pain are:
    • Press the skin on the outer ankle and hold for 1 minute. Use fingertips to apply pressure without pressing too hard.
    • Apply pressure on the webbing between the thumb and the index finger for about two minutes and release. Soon your pain will vanish.
  10. Alcohol:

    • Saving the best for the last, a neat scotch does a lot of good for your toothache! It is antiseptic after all.
    • To try this effective method of quick relief from tooth pain, soak a cotton ball in alcohol and apply on the affected area.
    • If you love drinking whiskey, pour a small peg and gulp it down, but only after leaving it for about 30 seconds on the affected tooth.
    • Alcohol will strilise the area & make it free from microbes, however, this is a method that should be used in optimal quantities.
