Not every time rushing to a dentist is the solution for a toothache! Sounds strange? Well, not really. A sinus toothache is one such situation where there is an inflammation of the maxillary sinus, more commonly known as a sinus infection. This kind of tooth pain has no relation to dental cavities. Sinuses are air filled cavities with a thin layer of mucous membrane, present in the skull, cheeks, eyes and nasal areas. Bacterial infection can enhance mucous production, which in turn, block the sinuses and creates an environment where the bacteria thrives and multiplies. Air flow into the sinus cavity is restricted. The inflammation of the sinuses around the cheeks can sometimes swell to such an extent that it puts pressure on the roots of the upper teeth. This in turn causes a sinus toothache. One of the main concerns is that it is not easily detected as a sinus toothache.

Sinus pain are of two types- Acute and Chronic. Acute Sinus lasts for a short period whereas Chronic Sinus lasts for months, sometimes longer.

Sinus pain can be caused due to the following factors:

  • Viruses:

Cold is the most common cause for sinus infections. The inflammation of the nasal passages blocks the pores that allow airflow causing sinus pain.
  • Pollutants:

Air pollution is one of the main causes of sinus infections. Dust, smog, smoke are a few examples which can instantly cause an infection or swelling of the sinuses.
  • Smoking:

Smoking is just as harmful for the sinuses. Cigarette smoke can also irritate nasal and eye passages and could then become the stimulant for an infection.
  • Chronic medical conditions:

Certain chronic conditions make the body prone to sinus infections as the immune system is weak. Diseases like diabetes can lead to sinus infections.
  • Allergies:

Studies have shown that people with allergies have more severe sinus infections. An allergy can become a catalyst to sinus pain therefore it is essential to be extra cautious if one is allergy prone.

Coming to the symptoms of sinus pain, here is a list of some prominent ones:

  • Pain:

Sinus pain is the most common symptom as is obvious. Pain around the cheeks, eyes and nose could possibly be an indication that the toothache could be a cause of sinus pain.
  • Headaches:

Swelling of the sinuses in the skull can lead to severe headaches. This could trigger earaches and toothaches. Normally it is worst in the morning when the fluids are filled around the head.
  • Cough:

The discharge from the sinuses can lead to collection at the throat area which will trigger irritation and coughing out of the discharge.
  • Congestion:

A blockage in the nasal passage will create a difficulty in breathing as air flow will be restricted. This is one of the more obvious symptoms for a sinus infection.

Other signs of a sinus infection include fatigue, fever, bad breath, loss of smell.

In addition to the following factors, if there is pain around the upper teeth, this is a sign of a sinus toothache or dental sinus.

Here is a list of home remedies for Sinus tooth pain/dental sinus:

  • Fluids:

Taking fluids to hydrate the body is the first step to cure sinus blockage. Drink lots of water and fluids that contain electrolytes. Coconut water is a great source of electrolytes such as magnesium, potassium and sodium, which also helps in supporting the immune system to fight bacteria and infections.
  • Steam:

Steam can be used to moisten the sinuses and help reduce swelling and inflammation. A hot steam bath would be ideal. Additionally, steam inhalation is highly recommended to clear the sinuses.
  • Garlic:

The bacteria which causes sinus infections is highly vulnerable to garlic. Apply crushed garlic on the affected tooth or take a few garlic capsules a day.
  • Spicy food:

It has been said that certain spicy foods contain mucus diluting properties. Horse radish and chili peppers are a few examples of such foods.
  • Humming:

Humming increases the airflow in the affected area thereby reducing mucus building. This is similar to what water does to sinuses as well. Humming to the point which engages the muscles of the affected area should provide relief.
  • Head Positioning:

The positioning of the head is very important while sleeping in order to prevent the mucous from storing up around the head. Make sure that the head is tilted to allow the mucus to flow downwards.

Other home remedies include turmeric and ginger which can be both applied on the affected tooth to relieve dental sinus.

Consulting an ENT doctor at the earliest is the best solution to permanently cure dental sinus pain. Antibiotics will help in giving pain relief. Regular dental checkups will aid in maintaining good oral care. Inhaling Steam & Mucolytic agents may be of some relief.
