All That You Need to Know to Keep Your Baby’s Teeth Clean

16 June 2014, Dabur Dental Team

A regular cleaning routine is the only way in the world to ensure that your kids have healthy and clean teeth. You must begin cleaning your baby’s gums even before your baby has teeth. It gets both you and your child into the habit of keeping the mouth clean. Wipe all parts of the gums and teeth with a wet and soft wash cloth. Be extra gentle when the baby is teething.

Start brushing your baby’s teeth with a soft, baby brush as soon as you spot the first tooth. Start flossing when you see two adjoining teeth. Make sure to be gentle on your child’s gums so as not to injure them with the floss. Children under 3 years of age should have their teeth brushed by an adult. When they start brushing on their own, supervise all their brushing sessions, at least till they turn 6. Powered brushes are a good option for children especially if they are unable to effectively clean all the surfaces of their teeth.

The Correct Brushing Method
Firstly, always hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the teeth. Point the bristles to where the gums and teeth meet. Then, use the toothbrush making gentle circles. Do not scrub. Clean every surface of every tooth. For the front teeth, use the front part of the brush.

The Correct Flossing Method
Take a piece of floss and wrap it around your middle fingers, leaving about 2 inches between the hands. Use your index fingers to guide the floss between the teeth. Now slide the floss between the teeth and wrap it into a "C" shape. It should wrap around the base of the tooth, where the tooth meets the gum. Then wipe the tooth from bottom to top 2 or 3 times or more, until it is squeaky clean. Be sure you floss both sides of each tooth, and don't forget the backs of the last molars. Move to an unused part of the floss as you move from tooth to tooth.

The Correct Toothbrushes
For kids, always remember to use a brush with soft and rounded bristles. Also, make sure the toothbrush is the right size for your child's mouth. Always change the toothbrush every 2-3 months to maintain hygiene.

The Correct Toothpaste
It is important that you use totally safe toothpaste for your baby, something that will not harm your baby even if it’s swallowed accidently. Try the best toothpaste in India- Babool. Always remember that excessive swallowing of toothpaste by young children may result in dental fluorosis. Thus it is important that children under 6 years of age should be supervised during brushing and only use a small amount of toothpaste.

Protect Baby Teeth
To really give your child the healthiest teeth, you should also:
  • Reduce the sugar content in the feeds that your baby takes. Only offer either breast milk or formula milk, or cooled, boiled water as drinks for your baby.
  • Discourage your baby from drinking from a baby bottle as soon as he can sit up and drink from a cup.
  • Make sure your baby eats a calcium rich and balanced diet.
  • Avoid too much snacking between meals.
Maintain proper oral hygiene and choose the right toothpaste to keep all dental problems away & ensure proper dental care.
