If you are suffering from gum disease, you may experience red, swollen, tender and bleeding gums. There can also be a persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth. Besides poor oral hygiene, even plaque, hormonal changes, some medications, certain treatments, genetic factors, illnesses and addictions which cause gum diseases.

There are three stages of gum disease:

STAGE 1: GINGIVITIS
The earliest stage of this dental problems is called Gingivitis. During this stage, there is an inflammation of the gums caused by plaque build-up at the gum-line. This happens due to lack of daily or regular brushing and flossing, which results in producing toxins that can irritate the gum tissue. Bleeding can also be a symptom during this stage. At this early stage in gum disease, damage can be improved, since the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place are not yet affected.

STAGE 2: PERIODONTITIS
This is the 2nd stage of gum disease . At this stage, the supporting bone and fibres that hold your teeth in place are irreversibly damaged. Your gums may begin to form a pocket below the gum line, which traps food and plaque. Proper dental treatment and improved home care can usually help prevent further damage.

STAGE 3: ADVANCED PERIODONTITIS
This is the third and final stage of gum disease. During this stage, the fibres and bone supporting your teeth are destroyed, which can cause your teeth to shift or loosen. This can affect your bite and, if aggressive treatment can't save them, teeth may need to be removed.
