No matter what your age, tooth decay is not good news for anyone. Preventing this dental problem is largely in our own hands. Read on to know all about tooth decay:

What is tooth decay?

Tooth decay is the damage that occurs when the bacteria in your mouth make acids that eat away a tooth. It can lead to a hole in the tooth, called a cavity. If not treated, tooth decay can cause pain, infection, and tooth loss.

What causes tooth decay?

  • Poor oral hygiene -

If you do not brush your teeth in the correct manner regularly or clean between them with floss, you are at a higher risk of tooth decay.
  • Diet

If you are not watching what you are eating, chances are that you may be in for some major dental problems. Eating and drinking stuff that is high in carbohydrates, particularly snacking regularly between meals, will increase your risk of tooth decay. Also sweet and sticky foods and drinks such as chocolate, sweets, sugar and fizzy drinks and starchy foods such as crisps, white bread, pretzels and biscuits cause tooth decay. If you happen to consume such foods, make sure you brush your teeth properly to ensure these foods do not remain stuck in between your teeth and gums.
  • Dry mouth

People who have lower levels of saliva in their mouth are at higher risk of developing tooth decay, because saliva helps to keep the surface of your teeth clean and can neutralise acids in your mouth. In fact, saliva also contains enzymes which kill germs.
  • Bad Habits

People who smoke and drink alcohol regularly are at an increased risk of tooth decay. Tobacco causes dry mouth and alcohol can contribute to the erosion of tooth enamel. Here are some more causes of tooth decay.

How can one prevent tooth decay?

  • Maintain oral hygiene

Brush your teeth at least twice a day in the correct manner for at least 3 to 5 minutes by the watch using India’s best toothpaste - Meswak. You can also brush or at least rinse your mouth after every meal and especially before going to bed. Brushing at bed time is extremely important as most dental problems start while we are asleep. Your toothbrush can not reach everywhere. So, always remember to floss daily to remove any food residue from your mouth that remains stuck in between your teeth and gums.
  • Eat the correct things

Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacks. Avoid carbohydrates such as candy and chips, which can remain stuck on the tooth surface. If sticky foods are eaten, brush your teeth soon afterwards.
  • Regularise dentist visits

You must make it a point to visit your dentist every 6 months. He can indicate the start of a problem and professionally clean your teeth to ensure there is no tooth decay or other dental problems.
  • Researchers are developing new means to prevent tooth decay. Some talk of a chewing gum and others of some minerals or mouthwashes that can detect and heal cavities early on. However, always remember that prevention is better than cure and make a healthy start for a healthy mouth!
