Let us move on to answer the most commonly asked questions on the dental problem of teeth sensitivity
  • What is tooth sensitivity?
When you have sensitive teeth, activities such as brushing, flossing, eating and drinking can cause a sharp, temporary pain in your teeth. Tooth sensitivity is caused by the gradual exposure of the softer part of your tooth that lies under the tooth enamel, called the dentine.

  • What causes tooth sensitivity?

    • Over-brushing: Sometimes tooth sensitivity comes from brushing with too much force or with a very hard-bristled toothbrush.
    • Acidic Foods: Consuming tomato sauce, lemon, grapefruit, kiwi, and pickles can cause pain in the teeth.
    • Gum Disease: Receding gums can cause tooth sensitivity. If the gum disease progresses, chances are you may lose your teeth as well.
    • Lack Of Oral Hygiene: Excessive plaque may cause teeth sensitivity as well. An excessive build-up of plaque can cause your enamel to wear down and the teeth to become sensitive.

  • What are the symptoms of tooth sensitivity?
Having sensitive teeth can mean anything from getting a mild sting to having severe discomfort that can last for several hours. You are more likely to feel this dental problem when drinking or eating something cold or hot, sweet or acidic. It can also be an early warning sign of more serious dental problems too.

  • How can you treat sensitive teeth?

    • Use a de-sensitising toothpaste. Regular usage can help block pain associated with sensitive teeth.
    • Your dentist might apply fluoride to the sensitive areas of your teeth to strengthen tooth enamel and reduce pain.
    • It is also important to cover exposed root surfaces. Sometimes even a root canal can help.

To prevent another episode of tooth sensitivity, your dentist may recommend that you limit the intake of foods that trigger it off such as such as carbonated drinks, citrus fruits, wine and yogurt. Also, your dentist will advise you to maintain good oral hygiene - brush and floss daily, avoid vigorous or harsh scrubbing. If you grind your teeth, ask your dentist about a mouth guard as it can fracture teeth and cause sensitivity.
Maintain proper oral hygiene and choose the right toothpaste to keep all dental problems away & ensure proper dental care.
